SAT ELA Prep

Overview:

The SAT English course is designed to help students gain the necessary skills to approach any SAT English question with confidence and strategy. The course includes a mixture of direct teaching of concepts paired with hands-on practice and discussion, ultimately leading to improvement regardless of your starting grade.

Skills to Learn:

• Proficiency in reading comprehension, including understanding main ideas, identifying supporting details, and making inferences
• Mastery of grammar and usage rules, including sentence structure, punctuation, and vocabulary in context
• Effective essay writing skills, including crafting a strong thesis statement, organizing ideas logically, and providing supporting evidence
• Strategies for analyzing and synthesizing information from a variety of texts, including literary fiction, social studies, and science passages

Curriculum: 

Diagnostic Test

• Week 1: Approaching the reading portion, approaching the writing portion
• Week 2: Reading science
• Week 3: Reading literature
• Week 4: Reading history & social science

REVIEW TEST 1

• Week 5: Writing conventions: informative, narrative, argument
• Week 6: Etymology
• Week 7: Effective Language Use: precision/concision, style/tone, syntax
• Week 8: Grammar: agreement, possessives, frequently confused words

REVIEW TEST 2

• Week 9: Grammar: punctuation, subordination/coordination, parallel structure, modifier placement, shifts, pronouns
• Week 10: Grammar: conventional expression, logical comparison, items in a series, nonessential/parenthetical elements
• Week 11: Essay: decoding the prompt, maintaining focus, using an outline
• Week 12: Essay: writing efficiently, prioritizing important features
