Overview:
The AP English Language and Composition course offers a comprehensive exploration of rhetoric, composition, and critical analysis of non-fiction texts. Through the study of diverse texts and writing assignments, students will develop their ability to craft effective arguments, analyze rhetorical strategies, and express their ideas clearly and persuasively. This course prepares students for the AP English Language and Composition exam and provides valuable skills applicable to college-level writing and analysis.
Skills to Learn:
- Proficiency in close reading and analysis of non-fiction texts, including essays, articles, speeches, and visual texts
- Ability to craft persuasive and coherent arguments using evidence and rhetorical strategies
- Mastery of effective writing techniques, including thesis development, organization, style, and syntax
- Critical thinking skills for evaluating and synthesizing multiple perspectives on complex issues
Prerequisites:
- Strong foundation in English grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension
- Analytical thinking skills and the ability to analyze and interpret complex texts
- Previous coursework in high school English or equivalent background knowledge
- Willingness to engage actively in class discussions and writing assignments
Curriculum:
1) Rhetorical Analysis:
- Understanding rhetorical strategies (ethos, pathos, logos)
- Analyzing author’s purpose, audience, and tone
- Identifying rhetorical devices (metaphor, simile, imagery, etc.)
2) Argumentation and Persuasion:
- Crafting persuasive arguments and counterarguments
- Developing a clear and compelling thesis statement
- Using evidence effectively to support arguments
3) Synthesis and Research:
- Synthesizing information from multiple sources to develop a cohesive argument
- Conducting research and evaluating sources for credibility and relevance
- Incorporating sources into written arguments with proper citation
4) Writing Style and Syntax:
- Analyzing authorial style and tone
- Experimenting with different writing styles and rhetorical techniques
- Improving sentence structure and syntax for clarity and effectiveness
5) Critical Reading and Analysis:
- Close reading and annotation of texts for deeper understanding
- Analyzing the structure, organization, and language of non-fiction texts
- Evaluating arguments and identifying logical fallacies
6) Revision and Editing:
- Revising and editing drafts for clarity, coherence, and precision
- Proofreading for grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors
- Seeking and incorporating feedback from peers and instructors
7) Visual Rhetoric and Multimedia Texts:
- Analyzing visual texts (advertisements, infographics, political cartoons)
- Understanding the use of visuals in persuasion and argumentation
- Integrating visual elements into written arguments
8) Exam Preparation and Practice:
- Review of key concepts and skills tested on the AP English Language and Composition exam
- Practice with multiple-choice and free-response questions
- Test-taking strategies and tips for success on the AP exam
Through a combination of reading, writing, discussion, and revision, students will develop their analytical and writing skills in preparation for the AP exam and beyond. This course will empower students to engage critically with a wide range of texts and to express themselves effectively in both written and oral communication.
