AP English Literature and Composition

Overview:

The AP English Literature and Composition course offers students an opportunity to explore a diverse range of literary texts and develop their analytical and interpretive skills. Through close reading, critical analysis, and writing about literature, students will deepen their understanding of literary devices, themes, and the historical and cultural contexts in which texts are written. This course prepares students for the AP English Literature and Composition exam and fosters a lifelong appreciation for literature.

Prerequisites:

• Strong foundation in English grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension
• Analytical thinking skills and the ability to analyze and interpret complex texts

• Willingness to engage actively in class discussions and writing assignments

Curriculum:

1) Literary Analysis:

• Close reading and interpretation of literary texts
• Analysis of plot, character, setting, and theme
• Identifying and analyzing literary devices and techniques
  

2) Poetry Analysis:

• Understanding poetic forms, structures, and techniques
• Interpreting tone, mood, and imagery in poetry
• Analyzing poetic devices such as rhyme, meter, and figurative language

3) Drama Analysis:

• Study of dramatic conventions, including dialogue, stage directions, and dramatic irony
• Analysis of characterization, conflict, and themes in plays
• Understanding the role of performance and staging in interpreting drama

4) Prose Fiction Analysis:

• Exploration of narrative techniques, point of view, and narrative structure
• Analysis of character development, plot twists, and narrative voice in novels and short stories
• Interpretation of themes and symbols in prose fiction

5) Literary Themes and Motifs:

• Identifying recurring themes and motifs across different literary works
• Exploring how authors use themes to convey deeper meanings and messages
• Analyzing the significance of literary themes in cultural and historical contexts

6) Literary Criticism and Theory:

• Introduction to different schools of literary criticism (formalism, feminism, Marxism, etc.)
• Applying critical lenses to interpret literary texts from different perspectives
• Engaging in critical debates and discussions about literary works

7) Writing About Literature:

• Crafting literary analysis essays with clear thesis statements and well-supported arguments
• Incorporating textual evidence and quotations to support literary interpretations
• Developing writing skills for literary analysis, including organization, coherence, and style

8) Exam Preparation and Practice:

• Review of key concepts and skills tested on the AP English Literature and Composition exam
• Practice with multiple-choice and free-response questions

Through a combination of reading, writing, discussion, and reflection, students will deepen their understanding and appreciation of literature while honing their critical thinking and writing skills.
